Nima

SUBJECT: CHILD RIGHTS

(2004, Holandija, 15 min)
Directed and photographed by Annelies Kruk

Nima is a lively Somali teenager, who has been living in a centre for refugees for 5 years.
Nima and her mother are waiting for a decision on their asylum application in a refugee centre in the Netherlands. War forced them away from their native country Somalia, and life is already taking root in another world. Every day Nima goes to see the porter to ask if the letter finally granting her and her mother residence permits has arrived. Friends, hobbies and school have tied them closely to the Netherlands; the only thing lacking is the court's ruling.
Nima,13, ponders the blatant differences between Somalia and the Netherlands she has experienced from her traumatic circumcision to dress codes and dating. For the time being she's trapped between two cultures and world's but at the same time she's made her mind up on which country she wants to live in. The decision, regrettably, just isn't hers to make.
