Blood Diamonds ForeverSUBJECT: ARMED CONFLICTS (Denmark, 40 min)Halfdan Muurholm, Stefan Schaaf, Thomas Aders The civil war in Angola between the government and UNITA rebels has waged for over 27 years, and diamonds are the principle source of financing for both sides. In theory, the UN has banned all trade with UNITA diamonds. The international diamond industry reassures consumers that the chance of purchasing a "conflict diamond" is virtually zero. But in practice, it is impossible to prove the origin of diamonds, and illegal sales take place every day. This investigative documentary follows the circuitous path of a 1/2 carat diamond from rebel-held Angolan territory to the diamond markets of Antwerp. It turns out to be all too easy to purchase illegal diamonds in Angola and then "legally" sell them in Europe. The UN ban is revealed to be an ineffective "paper tiger." Media coverage of the ban's supposed success serves only to mask the truth that the trade in blood diamonds continues unabated. $2 Suggested Donation to Amnesty International Halfdan Muurholm is a producer and co-owner of the Turbine Film (http://www.turbinefilm.dk/).
